3 EDITING FACTS | TEALA WARD PHOTOGRAPHY
For those of you interested in photography or interested in knowing some of the most important editing facts, this post if for you. Showing up to a photo session and taking pictures of my clients is only part of my job. Editing can often times be the most time consuming part and knowing more about the editing process can help you as a client, fellow photographer or curious individual.
First, light is king. It is the single most important factor in creating great images. Your photographer should know how to put you in good light during your photo session. Editing images with great lighting has the ability to change good photos into phenomenal images. You can’t fake good light in post processing.
Second, be sure you review your photographer’s portfolio before you hire them. Everyone has different editing styles and some may not speak to you. Be sure that you aren’t asking your photographer to edit like someone else. Not only is it likely they won't do it, you may offend them. Look for a consistent portfolio to ensure that you are getting an editing style you love. And for the love... don’t slap filters on your professionally edited photos. Why would you hire a professional and then edit them yourself?
Finally, remember that editing takes longer than shooting. This is where a photographer’s voice comes to life or at least where mine does. Light is the first element I strive to capture but editing is the second but equally as vital piece. Each photo is looked at and culled based on emotional responses and feelings evoked from the photo. Then, colors are corrected and delivered. Editing is the painting portion where you can play with color and light to enhance the emotion in a photograph.
No matter what role you play when it comes to photography, remember that it is a art. As a photographer we have steps necessary for greatness and if we succeed, the product is priceless.
