5 Tips for Hiring the Right Photographer
In my line of work, I meet a lot of people. Some mesh well with my style right away, but some have expectations that they don’t share with me. I never want my clients to walk away disappointed. There are clients who hire me because my photographs make them feel something, and there are clients who are simply looking for a pretty picture. Trust me when I say you can get pretty pictures from many photographers. You should find a photographer whose photos make you feel something, and whose personality is a good match with yours. Today I am sharing my top 5 tips on how to hire the right photographer for you.
Schedule a meeting or at least a phone call.
Some people want to book a photographer without meeting with them first. In my experience, a meeting or phone call is so important in determining if they are a good fit for you. I always recommend a meeting with my clients. I want them to ask me questions about my process and what they should expect before they hire me.
Be open to getting to know each other.
Let's chat like old friends! I want my clients to get to know me and my personality just as much as I want to know them. When I am your photographer, I really want to know your story, even the messy parts. I would love to know why you are deciding to have photos taken right now, at this point in your life. I will probably ask questions about you and your spouse. I will probably ask your kids about things they like and don't like. This ensures that your photos are uniquely yours and tell your story well.
Don't focus on your kids' behavior being perfect.
When you are looking for someone to photograph you and your young family members, you need to find someone who knows that kids will be kids. Some of my favorite family portraits are of children being their silly, authentic selves.
Be open to styling suggestions.
Comb through your photographer's portfolio and look at the styling in the photos. Do the clothes look like clothing you would wear? Ask your photographer if they have suggestions on colors and styling that will complement your body type and the environment, and ask for help coordinating all members of the family. I have a whole toolbox of suggestions on how to make styling work for you!
Get to know your photographer.
Follow them on social media. Watch their Instagram stories. Make sure you know who they are so you can decide if your personalities will be a good match. You should choose someone that you truly enjoy working with, and whose photos you absolutely love!
